This week was a hard one. The biggest news, as far as I was concerned, was the uncalled for lay-offs at Marvel, and I didn't see anything funny there. I looked a little harder and decided the rumoured cancellation of ALPHA FLIGHT making yet another failed attempt of Marvel to relaunch the Canadian super-team with American writers had some mock to be made.

I think Marvel staffers wished the merger was more advanced -- several of them were laid off for no other reason than to make their CEO look better to the so far still hands-off Disney folk.

Hands-OFF Disney won't happen. EVER.
What's happening now is - they don't want sudden changes and damaging the very nature of the hot propperty they've purchased.
But allowing Marvel Universe to remain as it is and be part of the Mouse House..?
No way.
I'm sure you've got a better insight, here in Europe we can only speculate after reading articles and hearing the news.

Disney will stay hands-off until they think there's cause to involve themselves like they've done with other largely independent holdings of theirs (Pixar, for instance).

Great strip Richard. Too bad about Alpha Flight, Byrne, really had something in his original run. If they could recapture that then they would have something.

Would really like to see what an actual Canadian writer would do --assuming he or she was really talented. So far they US take is the Lame Avengers. The book never really felt Canadian in any real way, which I think would have a greater appeal in the end.

This kinda looks like it was drawn by Frank Miller. I know it couldn't be written by Frank Miller because there is not one mention of "whores".

And is smoking really forbidden in the Marvel Universe? Are they afraid readers will get imaginary second-hand smoke? Are the characters going to start wearing promise rings and promoting iCarly?

Joe Quesada put the anti-smoking rule in place: [link]

It only applies to main characters in their general readers lines (I can't recall if the Max line is ongoing or if this applies to the Ultimate Universe as well).

""It's not for every Marvel character," Quesada says. "It's, for the most part, any Marvel character that kids are going to identify with. So it's also depending on the book. " - so you can't have Wolverine smoke a cigar, because kids may emulate it. But you can have him stab people with his claws, because "he's the best at what he does" and that's ok, because that's what a role model does?

I understand what Quesada is getting at, but I think he's going about it quite the wrong way.

Can't disagree with that.

Really and truly. The EIC (I think it was Quesada) lost a relative to lung cancer, so smoking got a nix across the board.
